Honorary Mayor chicken dinner kickoff to take place at Moose Lodge on May 3

By PETER DAY

It’s deja vu for Honorary Mayor Lyle Thomas who again will face challenger Rock Griffith in the 2014 edition of the annual Honorary Mayor race.

The race officially will kick off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at the Moose Lodge. The Lucerne Valley community is invited to attend the free chicken dinner event.

Jean Fuqua, a longtime active member of the community, will prepare the home-cooked fried chicken. Jean Magee, who serves on the Municipal Advisory Committee with Fuqua, will be in charge of desserts.

The mayor’s race is the main fund-raiser for the Lucerne Valley Chamber of Commerce. The winner is the candidate who raises the most money.

Thomas and Griffith produced one of the largest amounts in memory last year for the organization. Each candidate held several fund-raising events with Griffith displaying his singing abilities by hosting karaoke events. In the final days, the 6’7” candidate donned ballet attire and collected money at the four-way stop.

A process engineer for Mitsubishi, Thomas received ample support from the mining community and local motorcycle riders.

Reservations are not needed to attend this Saturday’s event. The Moose Lodge is located at 31878 Laramie St, Lucerne Valley.
